Diesel OBD2 Scanner Rapid Customization for a North American Client

In the global automotive aftermarket, the speed of product iteration and differentiated features are the keys to success for brand owners. Our customer is an established automotive tool brand deeply rooted in the North American market. They keenly identified a strong demand among heavy-duty diesel pickup and light truck owners for a dedicated diagnostic tool, and planned to launch an OBD2 scanner capable of in-depth reading of engine-related data while also offering a high level of ingress protection. They wanted to hit the market before the upcoming peak sales season. The challenge was that the time window was only four months, and the project involved the custom development of several non-standard diagnostic protocols.

Faced with this urgent need, ACETOP quickly formed a joint project team consisting of a project manager, hardware engineers, embedded software engineers, and structural designers. We first held several rounds of in-depth online technical alignment meetings with the customer, clarifying the required SAE J1939 protocol stack, specific PID parameter reads, and the IP65 dust and water resistance requirement. Thanks to ACETOP’s powerful R&D capability, our software team performed deep tailoring and expansion on top of our existing, mature diagnostic platform. In just three weeks, they completed the porting of the communication protocol stack and the parsing of new data streams, and set up a test environment for simulation verification. On the hardware side, engineers selected an enhanced 32-bit automotive-grade processor to ensure stable operation in harsh electromagnetic environments, and simultaneously designed an ergonomic, anti-slip housing.

In the manufacturing phase, ACETOP’s complete, integrated production process chain played a pivotal role. After receiving the frozen design files, the mold development workshop used a high-speed CNC machining center to complete the manufacturing and trial of the dual-shot injection mold within 18 days. Meanwhile, the SMT workshop rapidly produced PCBA samples, and the metal and plastic injection center provided robust protective frames for the internal structural components. Although our light source laboratory primarily focuses on optoelectronic products, its precise testing methodology was adapted for rapid verification of the diagnostic tool's screen backlight consistency, ensuring readability under strong outdoor sunlight. As the various components became available, our five dedicated product assembly centers planned a specialized production line, where rigorously trained operators carried out assembly under the full monitoring of In-Process Quality Control (IPQC).

Quality control is the cornerstone of earning customer trust. ACETOP strictly executes a comprehensive quality management system from incoming materials to finished products. All incoming materials undergo IQC inspection, with key electronic components — such as OBD interface terminals, screens, and batteries — undergoing 100% inspection or sampling. During the process, IPQC conducts patrol inspections and records the soldering quality and assembly torque of each station. After final assembly, every single scanner is verified by an automated functional test fixture to ensure communication success rate and data stream accuracy conform to specifications, and passes an airtightness tester to verify its IP65 rating. Before shipment, our Outgoing Quality Assurance (QA) team performs another round of piece-by-piece appearance and functional spot checks to ensure that the products delivered to the customer are flawless.

Ultimately, ACETOP completed the delivery of the first batch of 8,000 units ten days ahead of schedule. After launch, the product quickly earned positive reviews from end-users for its stable performance and precise data readings. The customer promptly placed a follow-up order within the same season and designated ACETOP as the exclusive manufacturing partner for this product line.
